Tell us about yourself! What kickstarted your love affair with jewellery? How did you decide to start Dorisch, and why?
I’m Doris, a broke accessory lover who suffers from skin allergies. Unfortunately, most nickel-free and hypoallergenic jewellery options are made with semi-precious and fine jewels, which means they aren’t very affordable. I started Dorisch to answer the lack of affordable and trendy accessories available in my city for those with skin allergies. I thought: Why not be the first to sell affordable, but chic and trendy accessories in Kota Kinabalu?
What is the one thing you want Dorisch pieces to be known for?
I’d love for everyone to know our flower pendant necklace, which is a coin-sized round pendant with the flower of your birth month engraved on it. It’s made of stainless steel and plated in 18k gold, so it’s durable and hypoallergenic!
Do you handcraft Dorisch products? Tell us about the design, production, selection, and packaging process!
Yes! I handcraft some of my products. For instance, I handcraft my pearl dangle earrings and also assemble the parts for my flower pendant necklace.
What are some compliments you frequently hear about your jewellery?
Dorisch.co is known for stainless steel jewellery, and they often have very high water-and-soap-proof properties. They are rigid, and also do not tarnish. Our customers often tell us about how the gold plating stays, even after many showers. They also share that our earrings do not cause their skin allergies to flare up.

- You can brighten tarnished silver jewellery with only salt, aluminium foil, and hot water.
- Never wear stainless steel with real gold and silver jewellery. Gold and silver are softer metals than stainless steel. Combining these pieces will create friction, thus scraping off the gold and silver.

Knowledge on finance management is just as important as passion in this industry.
As a small business owner, how do you balance between reaching for your dreams, overcoming the obstacles in your way, and navigating the limitations of your finances and operations? How do you ensure you still achieve what you set out to achieve while maintaining a level head?
Whenever an opportunity or obstacle pops up, I measure how far I can go, and whether it is worthwhile for me to take the leap in my given financial condition. ‘What can I lose’ is the first thing that comes to mind, before I begin to estimate success. When gaining outweighs losing in my head, that’s where I decide to make my move!
Likewise, how do you maintain a healthy family life while running your small business?
I’m still working on this, haha! Fortunately, my family is very supportive of my small business, and so I find strength in that.
