It’s time to balik kampung! Whether your plans include land, air, or water travel, one thing remains true: you deserve better than a holiday spent dragging unwanted baggage with you. Are you the type to stuff your travel backpack to the gills like kuih dadar, or are you a basics only kind of traveller? For the record, we think it’s good to be prepared – BUT, we also think it’s important to keep a lean and minimalistic list of essentials. Here’s how to keep that backpack from splitting at the seams!

Consider Your Length Of Travel: Backpack Or Luggage?

It may be prudent when packing your travel backpack (or luggage case) to sit down and consider the length and nature of your trip. In general, some elements to consider are:

  • The length of your stay
  • Whether you will be traveling by car, plane, train, or others – as well as what your storage options are
  • Whether you will be able to do laundry while abroad
  • What the weather will be like where you are headed
  • What activities you have planned for your trip, as well as who you are visiting
  • The kind of amenities available in your location of travel

Once you’ve established the above, you’ll be able to progress to selecting your luggage for travel. Backpacks are a great option if you’re looking to grab and go, but if you find yourself in need of more space, a hard case with wheels may be the better choice. Make sure you choose one with numerous compartments, all the better to fit your various bits and bobs into.

If you’re traveling on public transport, we’d advice that you keep your things close and compact. Use as few bags as possible. After all, the more you have to carry, the likelier you are to accidentally leave something behind! Don’t forget to keep your luggage neatly labelled and easily identifiable for a smooth journey!

Don't leave packing to the last possible moment, because you could very well end up missing things you need!

How Heavy Is Too Heavy?

If you’re flying, be sure to weigh your luggage ahead of time to ensure that it adheres to your airline’s cabin rules. Because each airline has different allocations per passenger, it’s good to check well in advance to ensure everything goes according to plan. The same can be said for check-in luggage, with some airlines providing more weight allowances than others.

Similarly, check your carry-ons for liquids. Personal care products like shampoo, serums, and such need to be carefully packed in individual containers of not more than 100ml each. If you’re uncertain about your skincare and don’t want to risk having to toss it out at customs, opt for dry cleanser options instead. Or, simply buy travel-sized essentials that are measured out for you at 100ml or less!

What Are Some Essentials Deserving Of Room In Your Travel Backpack?

Here are some essentials we think you need with you on your Hari Raya Roadtrip!

Clever Ways To Make Room In Your Travel Backpack

When packing for a long trip with limited luggage space, it can help to narrow your things down into two separate piles: Wants and Needs. Here are a few ways to make more room in your travel backpack!

  • Iron your clothes before folding and rolling them up as flat as you possibly can. Do the same for everything fabric in your bag. Plan your outfits in advance so you pack no more, and no less.
  • Essentials like socks and underwear can be packed in multiples. However, you can pack fewer of each item if you’re able to do laundry.
  • Repack smaller amounts of your personal care products if you know you won’t use the entire travel-sized bottle.
  • Fill up all the gaps with small bits and bobs. This way, no space will go to waste.
  • Where possible, choose multi-purpose shoes that will bring you from day to night. If you’re going to be at the beach, pack flat flip-flops and stuff them in the side of your bag. If you must pack a separate pair of shoes, use the shoe cavily as a space to store your socks and other small items!

Oh No, I Have Motion Sickness!

Take it from us fellow motion sickness sufferers at Poptron – nothing can ruin a road trip faster than motion sickness. Thankfully, there’s help if you want it!

  • Keep a handy bottle of essential oil on hand and give it a sniff when you’re nauseated en-route! The best oils for this purpose include lavender, ginger, peppermint, and fennel.
  • Choose a seat in the front of the vehicle, where the motion is less severe. Keep your eyes on the horizon far away.
  • Do NOT look at your phone, or attempt to read while the car is moving. This can exacerbate your motion sickness.
  • Take a nap if you’re not on co-pilot duty!

In Conclusion…

Packing for a trip doesn’t need to be a stressful occasion! When you’re traveling, it’s essential to ensure you have everything you’ll need – but also, don’t stress out if you forget a thing or two. The important thing is to go with the flow, to have contingency plans, and to be sure you plan in advance to minimise mishaps and chaos. We hope you have safe travels – and from all of us at Poptron, have a very blessed Hari Raya Aidilfitri!
